I had promised a posting on my ire toward the semester system, so here goes.
For me, it seems that the main problem is just that in a year you end up doing so much less than would have been the case on the quarter system. Aside from the fact that I've had more time to slack on papers, I don't really see the advantage. We didn't cover that much more than we could have on quarters, just did it more slowly so that I became board rather quickly, and the overall impression is that I'VE DONE NOTHING. I've taken two semesters rather than three quarters, and gotten all of this time off. My vacations have also been shifted, but that's neither good nor bad. Although, I don't really see the point of the huge winter break, and kind of wish that I hadn't taken summer off. That's the problem. After a year in which I feel that I've done nothing, I don't really need the long summer break. It just feels wasteful and I'm getting impatient.
I think that the root of my problem here is that I like school. I like being a student. I like being busy. As lazy as I am, and as much work as school's been, I'm going to commit sacrilege here and say:
The semester system just is not demanding enough.
And all ya'll protesting that fact should live on the quarter system for a while. It's glorious and suits me much better. Besides which, businesses all have to live by quarters, so shouldn't we get used to it while still in school?

Oh, Meg,
You're a very nice girl, but I'm afraid you're alsoa very wrong girl. The semester system is superior to quarter system, hands down.
Feeling like you've done nothing, like you're not being challenged has nothing to do with how the learning is divided, it has to do with the content. I think you are in too easy a program.
Also, I suppose this applies more to undergrad, but more divisions means more wasted classes, more misterms, more finals, more classes spent explaining the syllubus. From a teacher's perspective is no contest.
I'll give quarters one thing, though, fifteen weeks is too long.
...Meg.. hello.
I do not understand sentence.
but,I thought the situation must be improved even a little. I clicked "NEXT BLOG" last night. I was surprised that it was the same template. Thank you for inviting me! Good night from Japan.
