Rather than trying to create a coherent post, I’m going to resort once again to a random list of things crossing my mind recently. This is by no means comprehensive, or even vaguely insightful, just those topics that popped to mind when I started jotting down randomness this morning.

  1. I know it makes you feel cool to say that you were into a band before they blew up, but be sure when doing this that you’ve got your timeline straight. If you’re 22 years old, you were likely in 5th grade when Basket Case invaded the radio airwaves. Therefore, I find it hard to believe that you or any of your friends were fans before Green Day really got big. This is the kind of statement I might buy from some one 25 years or older, with more credibility given if you happen to be from the east bay. There will be a certain degree of latitude given for cool older siblings, but that still only gets you so far. That’s the kind of thing that explains why my favorite song in the 2nd grade was Punk Rock Girl by the Dead Milkmen, not why anyone’s parents are letting their kids go to a rough concert at the age of 12.
  2. Speaking of Green Day, American Idiot has grown on me with more listening. I know that it’s a concept album etc, but (to quote Bryce) it’s also just this side of a cover album. The problem with this? With as good as each of the songs on the album is, I’m left wanting to hear the song from which it derives. So basically, as well done as this CD is, it leaves me terribly unsatisfied. The song that leaves me the most disappointed is actually not one that fits into the cover heading. Holiday just starts out sounding a lot like I Want to Be a Minority, so I get really excited to hear it, and then become disgruntled.
  3. I’m planning an orange line pub crawl for the end of the month. This will be primarily a GSF event, but I think it would be fun to bring in other groups. I realize that I might be able to gain access to hill staffers, and some friends’ various networks, but the more I do, the more this has to become a really organized event. This is going to take quite a bit of planning, so any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
  4. I’ve realized that my birthday will be spent far from home this year, as well as in class. Where this becomes an issue is that I need to be near water. There will be so sand to be had in this area, but I think I can get a reasonable group together for some waterfront fun after class on a Monday night… I’ve still got plenty of time to worry about it, and I’m planning a party for the following weekend, but this is something I’d like to work out in advance.
  5. August seems to be the transition into the semester for me. It’ll be plenty busy, but really just a taste of what’s to come. I’m beginning to dread the school year just because I’ve gotten used to the fun of summer. I may have been busy and excited, but at least it was things that I enjoyed and chose. I guess that’s not fair, as I’ve chosen and enjoy everything that I’ll be doing during the semester. I just need to come to terms with the fact that I’ll now return to having obligations rather than choices.

So there’s nothing worth a post in itself, but still a few thoughts. I need to actually sit down and read at some point, because the opportunity to do that for the hell of it is quickly dwindling, but there are a couple of long flights coming up. It’s probably also time to buy the Jack Johnson tickets, though that will have to wait until I’ve actually got money.
