It took me a while this morning to remember that District residents are called Washingtonians. That sounds too much like something that would crop up only on the local news. The term I hear most often is honestly just "District Resident". The honorable Russ proposes that DCite is the way to go. Personally, I'd like to seize on this opportunity to refer to myself as Columbian. The subtext in this politically preoccupied, overwhelmingly liberal city that quite often comes to the mercy of conservative law makers is delicious.
In the past I've been a Garden Grover and theoretically an Angeleno. Though I lived there for four years, I don't think I'd ever count as a Davisite, and what does some one call a person living in West Hollywood? (Others may respond with "gay", I'd more likely go with "Russian.") Arlingtonian has an old-timey ring to it that honestly does nothing for me. I'd say that Angeleno tends to win for best resident descriptor, and not just for places I've lived. Angeleno is arguably the best name for locals anywhere in the continental US. I dare you to find something better. New Yorker, Chicagoan, Baltimorons, etc have nothing on us. I think that's because city names are just cooler in Spanish. Something that I wish we'd do more of though is resident nicknames that have nothing to do with the name of the city. Residents of Buenos Aires are called portenos. How cool is that? Of course, I'm afraid that if that sort of thing were done for DC we'd end up being called nerds and wonks. Not quite as fun.
I guess the actual point of this post is that I'm no longer a Virginian. There's no way to reclaim the little piece of my soul that died when I gave up my California license (Though I'll always be a Californian. I can't change the way I was born.), but this move to the District at least makes me feel a little more like I belong here. I was happy in the Commonwealth, but it never managed to become a piece of me.
